A new 'Marathon Years' story

This week, after a long gap, I've published a new story in The Marathon Years series, my memoir of the years Lena and I spent battling dementia. In the book I plan to publish later, the story will be called 'The Fraud' (that's me, as you'll see). But on my website I've called it 'A Day in the Life of a Dementia Carer'. I hate writing long explicit titles like this, but I'm coming to realise that they're necessary. Dementia carers who are searching Google for guidance are not going to type in 'fraud'; but they probably will type 'dementia carer'. It's all about increasing my discoverability.

How you can help people to discover my stories

Talking of discoverability, I've also arranged for this story to appear in a popular Medium publication called 'Crow's Feet: Life As We Age'. The publication has 37,000 followers, with around 10 new articles published per day, so it gives me the opportunity to show my work to new readers who might be interested.

If you'd like to help me get discovered, here's a way you can. In Medium, readers applaud the stories they enjoy, awarding up to 50 'claps', by repeatedly clicking a 👏 icon at the beginning or end of the story, depending on how much they enjoyed it. The more claps a story gets, the more other readers will want to check it out, to see what all the commotion is about.

Many writers on Medium put their articles behind a paywall, meaning that they can only be read by Medium subscribers. I don't. The last thing I want is to put barriers between me and my readers. No membership is required to either read or applaud the story. So you know what I'd like you to do — but only if you genuinely enjoy the story of course! Here's the link to Medium.

Care Combine article - 'School's Out'

Last week, I promised a new Care Combine article, explaining what our dementia care system could learn from schools. On the website this week I've reposted one of my 2018 articles called 'School's Out'. I'll be updating the article this weekend — condensing it a little. But if you have a moment, take a look now: it's a fun thought experiment, exploring how we could best destroy our educational system, simply by applying the same approach we currently use for dementia care.

Future Plans

I published the newsletter on Friday last week, not the usual Tuesday. And it seemed to work — most of you seemed to find it in your inboxes more quickly. So I'll stay with a Friday mailing as I continue these weekly posts.

Thanks for reading and have a good week
